The cross I built for my display is 6 feet tall and about 4 feet wide. I used 1 inch PVC pipe to make this so it would be a little sturdier and less likely to break when the wind blows. None of the connectors are glued into place, this was mainly done to aid in storage (fold in the "arms") and to allow more room for the piece to flex.
To build this cross I used:
- 4 sticks of 1 inch PVC
- 6 - 1 inch PVC elbows
- 4 - 1 inch PVC crosses
- 12 - 1 inch PVC "T" pieces
I cut the pipe to the size I needed where each "block" is about a square foot. Be sure to take into consideration the extra length the connections will add when calculating how many lights to use. At the base of the cross I used a "T" piece on each side so that the cross can be slipped over the rebar that supports the cross. To light the cross I used red, white, and purple rope light. The red and white were easy pick ups from Home Depot, the purple not so much. One run of purple was to short so two pieces of rope light were used, the left over part was wrapped in a black garbage bag. Also, part of the white rope light quit working. Since each color strand is zip tied on individually replacing a color is not that difficult.
