Signs

The two signs that I use in my light show are the radio station sign and the website sign.

To make the radio station sign I took a piece of plexiglass from Home Depot and finely sanded the side that was going to be painted, this way the paint would stick better.  The side that is painted is the back side so what the template looks like is a mirror image.  Once the sanding was finished the side was taped over.  After the tape was applied I taped the templates to the tape and used an exacto knife to cut out the templates.  Since sign takes different colors of paint not all the template cut outs are removed.  The way I did it was to start with the darker colors first, that way the lighter colors are not darkened.  I only did one color at a time leaving time for that coat of paint to finish using only light sprays.  When all of the paint had been applied I built a box around the sign and used a simple under cabinet light to back light the sign.

The website sign is made using the same concept.  The material used for this sign was a corrugated plastic (Open House) sign from Home Depot.  To cover over what was on the sign originally I used some Kilz so the paint would cover better.  Again I taped the entire front of this sign once the background had been painted and dried.  Each word was painted in a different color and the other words covered so there was no chance for over spray.  After the sign had been painted I made a PVC frame and attached the sign using zip ties.  To light the sign a string of C7 lights were attached through drilled holes.
